Jorge Martin wins Indonesian MotoGP; Marc Marquez and Enea Bastianini DNF
Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia have clarified any perceived tensions between them during the intense 2024 MotoGP title race in Indonesia.
Martin, riding for Pramac, claimed his third Grand Prix win of the season on Sunday, leading every lap from pole position. Meanwhile, Bagnaia finished third, allowing Martin to extend his championship lead to 21 points. This comes after Martin's lead was briefly reduced to 12 points following a sprint race crash while leading.
Tensions appeared to rise after Bagnaia commented that Martin had entered Turn 16 too fast during the sprint, leading to his crash. These comments were later interpreted as a possible "war of words" when Martin, upon hearing Bagnaia's remark, responded, "It's really easy to speak when everything is going good." Some saw this as a subtle jab at Bagnaia.
Further fueling speculation, the post-race parc ferme scene on Sunday raised eyebrows when Martin initially seemed to ignore Bagnaia, who had approached him to offer congratulations. The two riders did eventually embrace, but the moment sparked questions.
Addressing the situation in the post-race press conference, Bagnaia downplayed any issues, saying, “I think he was close to having a fall from the heat when we were speaking in parc ferme. There’s nothing between us. During the rider parade this morning, what I said to him was the truth. I saw some spicy words on social media, but there’s nothing to that. I was simply acknowledging that he was faster than me in that corner.”
Martin echoed Bagnaia's sentiment, explaining that his delayed reaction in parc ferme was due to physical exhaustion rather than any personal animosity. “I was a bit tired," Martin said. "Sometimes things get lost in translation. What he says and what I hear can sometimes be different. But it’s just jokes, and the important thing is our relationship is good.”
Initially, it seemed Martin’s championship lead might be reduced to 17 points, as second-placed finisher Pedro Acosta was under investigation for a potential tyre pressure infringement. However, the stewards later cleared Acosta, attributing the tyre pressure issue to a rim leak rather than any rule violation.
With the title race heating up, both riders have made it clear that their relationship remains solid, despite the fierce competition.
